Public preview of the new observatory on August 9th
On Thursday evening, August 9th, from 7 to 11 p.m., ORAS will offer a public preview of the new observatory site, including the Bruce Bedow Memorial Observatory. Tiffany Stone Wolbrecht, Planetarium Lecturer at Youngstown State University, will be giving a talk entitled "What's Up," a tour of what can be seen in the night sky throughout the month of August. Tours of the new observatory will be offered starting at 7 p.m. Weather permitting, observing through the new 30-inch telescope will begin at 9 p.m. Thursday evening's activities are free and open to the general public. We hope you'll join us for this event!
Events throughout the year
The Oil Region astronomical observatory in Two Mile Run County Park was closed effective January 1, 2015. ORAS is in the process of constructing our new facility, and we hope to have the project near completion by the fall of 2018. Due to construction activities, we have been unable to maintain a regular calendar of observatory events in 2018.
We will do our best to open up the new site for specific events. Those events will be advertised via regional news outlets, and through e-mails to ORAS members. We thank you for your ongoing support and patience, as we work to bring about a new and improved facility for the entire region to enjoy. Please see the Google calendar below for specific events.
If you have questions, please call Tim Spuck at 814-354-6515.
